"This is a really exciting moment in the history of Birmingham. A once in a lifetime opportunity to do something for Birmingham, for the citizens of Birmingham, but also will be of national significance."

Caption: The BIG CITY PLAN aims to find out exactly what the people of Birmingham want from their city. The plan will then be presented to the council who are ready to make BOLD CHANGES

10 BIG IDEAS

Caption: After discussions with a wide group of city representatives as well as international experts we formed 10 BIG IDEAS as starting points for debate.

LIVE LOCAL

Caption: Alex Bishop, Birmingham Future

"I live in the city centre at the moment with my partner. We're thinking about starting a new family, but actually there isn't an option for us to stay living in the city centre"

Caption: Hannah Martyr, Property Developer

"Let's have some interaction between the people who live and work. Let's have some interaction between the diverse residents and workers of the city."

Caption: Idea 1: A Birmingham with many more families living in the city centre.

LEARN LOCAL

Caption: John Worthington, Urban Planner, Highbury Initiative

"Instead of seeing separate areas — this is learning, this is pleasure, this is living, this is working — we need to blur those boundaries and bring them together."

Caption: Idea 2: A Birmingham city centre with top schools for children from all walks of life.

BUILD LOCAL

Hannah Martyr speaks:

"I find it increasingly sad to see buildings being taken down and replaced with new things that don't seem to sum up what Birmingham is about at all."

Caption: Idea 3: Birmingham homes designed and built by the people of Birmingham in a Birmingham style.

BUY LOCAL

Caption: Eleanor and Scott, Local students

Eleanor speaks:

"Shopping-wise it would be nice to have a bit more of an alternative scene, ‘cos it's just that it's very mainstream shops, there's no kind of vintage markets or anything like that."

Caption: Idea 4: A Birmingham where local independent retailers can grow and thrive.

CREATE LOCAL

Caption: Claire Edwards, Festival planner

"We've got the home of Bhangra here, we've got amazing reggae artists as well as an indie scene and actually world class orchestras."

Caption: Jemima Cattel, Media Company for young people

"There's a great deal of creative talent here, but really they just need a bit more support to promote themselves."

Caption: Stef Lewandowski, Creative director

"We should be looking at kind of a large scale festival programme. We should be looking at installing a public art space right in the city centre."

Caption: Idea 5: Create spaces that welcome alternative lifestyles, innovation and creativity whilst keeping Birmingham authentic.

MOVE LOCAL

Caption: Jon Tricker, Urban planner

"There's a lot of car dominance, there's a lot of severance, it's very difficult to walk around and one of the things we need to do is basically re-prioritise. We need to get people back on the buses, we need to make the trains work harder and we need to get the people walking and cycling round the city centre."

Caption: Idea 6: A Birmingham... BUS... TAXI... BIKE!

STREET LOCAL

Caption: Claire Edwards, Festival planner

"I think Birmingham is a city of villages, many different areas that sort of became part of Birmingham over the years and there's still that mentality. Sometimes people live together around each other and part of that is exacerbated by transport issues and actually the fact that getting from one part of Birmingham to another is actually quite complex, you've always got to go into the middle and out."

Caption: Idea 7: A Birmingham with a more walkable city centre. Great streets and great places!

RENEW LOCAL

Caption: Patrick Bellew, Environmental designer

"Birmingham has a lot of old buildings that need to be renovated. How do you leverage better energy efficiency into those buildings? Can you do it more efficiently by actually paying for some of that renovation by discounting carbon on the new buildings that you build?"

Caption: Idea 8: Birmingham as a low carbon city, setting an example for the rest of the country.

START LOCAL

Caption: Chris Brown, Investor in urban regeneration

"We're here in the middle of Digbeth and it's got the potential of being one of the UK's most vibrant, creative neighbourhoods – full of creative industries, full of potential, full of historic buildings, canals – just a fantastic place."

Caption: Idea 9: A Birmingham where small businesses can start up easily.

PLAY LOCAL

Jemima Cattel speaks:

"It's not really a place where people can just hang out."

Caption: Charlotte Carey, Lecturer

"There's very few green spaces in the city centre."

Hannah Martyr speaks:

"More space to breathe, more space to live. A nice environment."

Caption: Idea 10: A Birmingham with great city parks! Where you can get around by canal or river.
