Birmingham's city centre has undergone considerable change over recent years, shifting from a heavy reliance on manufacturing towards the higher value added sector.
This transition has had a number of successes: health and education, finance and business services and creative industries are demonstrating growth; and, the city centre is increasingly seen as an attractive office location.
On the other hand, there are areas where Birmingham needs:
- more high value added sectors that generate greater wealth, such as finance and business, research and development and knowledge intensive business services
- higher skills levels, to help release its growth potential
- more businesses run by ethnic minorities and women
- to create more opportunities to encourage more people into work
