Development

During 2008, the Big City Plan will take shape from a period of evidence gathering or 'baselining' through Issues and Options to selection of a Preferred Options that will be incorporated in an Area Action Plan that will be submitted for adoption as statutory planning guidance early in 2009.

During this same period, proposals for the economic and strategic means of delivering transformation will be developed.

The development of the Big City Plan is being coordinated with related initiatives including the Growth Prospectus, the Local Area Agreement, the Community Strategy and the Core Strategy.

The Plan will guide Birmingham's economic, social, physical, cultural and environmental future. It will help Birmingham perform successfully on an international stage and will equip Birmingham to meet both existing and future challenges, while building upon its recent successes.

A Sustainable Future for Birmingham

The future of Birmingham as a global, low-carbon city is affected by the decisions we make about sustainable development today.

Birmingham's Big City Plan is an important stage in the development of the city, embracing massive challenges like climate change, and delivering a sustainable urban renaissance.

Local people, businesses and other stakeholders are already shaping the plan to create a greener, smarter, fairer and more beautiful city centre over the next twenty years, without limiting the opportunities for future generations. And you too can play a part in the Big City Plan to make Birmingham a sustainable city.

Many of the themes and ideas mentioned in the Plan are focused on sustainability. The themes will enable us to achieve our shared ambitions for the city and its people, enhancing Birmingham's standing as a great international city and improving the quality of life for all of us.

They will develop what is already distinctive about the city, putting Birmingham's sustainability, culture, creativity, technology and enterprise at the centre of our plans and activities.
