The Plan

The process for a new masterplan for Birmingham began when the Leader of Birmingham City Council, Councillor Mike Whitby, commissioned a visioning study led by Professor Michael Parkinson in 2006, which set out the principles for a new masterplan for the city centre.

Then in August 2007 Urban Initiatives were appointed by the council to take the city centre masterplan, now known as the Big City Plan, to the next stage, by engaging leading thinkers in the city to help shape the future of Birmingham. Their initial thoughts and 'Big Ideas' were captured in a Charter which was launched to an audience of key individuals and organizations in the city at the end of February 2008.
