Birmingham is the largest retail centre in the country outside of central London.
The Bullring is a success and the forthcoming Cube and Martineau Galleries will continue to add to the shopping experience within the city centre.
However, Birmingham will need to continue to invest in the quality of its retail offer if it is to maintain this leading position.
More independent and niche shops are needed and more up-market shops are needed.
There is scope for more edgy, fringe, ethnic or student related markets and shops. These niche shops could cluster in different parts of the city centre, so that areas become known for certain types of shops.
